Public Perceptions of Climate Change in Cambodia

Public Perceptions of Climate Change in Cambodia

This study documents Cambodian people’s insights about issues that are commonly associated with climate change, and the coping mechanisms that they have implemented to deal with such issues. This qualitative research among over a hundred field questionnaire respondents from four provinces reveals an insufficient understanding among people of the causes of conditions that they experience (e.g. flooding, drought, etc.). Moreover, there appears to be some disconnect between the concerns and priorities of the people and the focus of adaptation planning and the findings of national climate change impact projections in Cambodia.

The study recommends for a unified approach to be undertaken by government bodies, researchers, NGOs and civil society, and for existing environmental, energy and poverty alleviation projects to be assessed for potential climate change adaptation/mitigation qualities in order to generate funding to allow for upscaling and replication of such projects.
